Iran seized sanctioned tanker
On Ma, 8, 2025, the Iranian Navy had conducted a special operation to seize the 'Ocean Koi' for attempting to export Iranian oil. The ship was last reporte NUC in pos 24° 26' N 058° 05' E. The name has been 'Jin Li' since Nov 30, 2025. The tanker transported various Iranian hydrocarbons on at least 16 occasions since 2021; and with full knowledge of Iran because half of her loadings were conducted directly at port in Iran while the other half were conducted via Ship-to-Ship transfer further out. The vessel was sanctioned by US OFAC on Feb 25. Following these sanctions, Barbados de-registered the vessel, leaving it technically stateless or operating under a false flag at the time of seizure. The tanker was allegedly attempting to disrupt or illicitly export Iranian oil. It has transported Iranian hydrocarbons on at least 16 occasions since 2021. Approximately 50 % of these loadings occurred directly at Iranian ports, while the remainder were via Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfers. AIS Spoofing Intelligence reports confirmed active location manipulation on May 8 at multi-a.m. UTC on the day of the seizure. While the vessel’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) broadcasted a position within the Gulf of Oman, multi-source analysis confirmed a discrepancy between the broadcasted coordinates and the ship’s actual physical location. This sugfleet that the vessel was utilising spoofing techniques to mask its movements. Give tge vessel's long-standing integration into the Iranian oil trade ecosystem, the operation likely served two strategic purposes: A visual demonstration of Tehran’s ability to control the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz amidst rising tensions with the US. By seizing the vessel, Iran effectively pulled a sanctioned, slandered asset out of reach of international authorities, securing it within domestic waters under the guise of legal proceedings.
