Fishing vessel sank for the third time in Hafnarfjörður

The 'Jökull-SK 16' sank on the night of Sep 12, 2026, in Hafnarfjörður harbour, marking the third time the vessel has gone to the bottom there, and almost exactly a year after the ship's last sinking on the evening of Sep 27, 2025, at the Óseyrarbryggja pier. The 'Jökull' already sank at the same pier on Aug 17, 2020, and was raised by the diving company Köfunarþjónustunnar. The Transportation Accident Investigation Board had found no explanation for why the 'Jökull' sank. The 80-ton vessel, built in Germany in 1959, had been due to be removed and disposed of in the coming days. Pumps had been kept aboard the vessel because water entered it over time. The ship, operated out of Sauðárkrókur by the company Gamli og Synir Ehf., has remained largely stationary in the harbour for years. The responsibility for raising was with its owners.
