Crew members released from hospital
Several crew members of the 'Jolyn' have been released from the hospital after the fire on May 24. They returned to the freighter in the Kuhwerder Port of Hamburg where they disconnected the ship's power and were guarding it. Because asbestos may have been released, the ship can only be boarded with respiratory protection. A sailing ban has been issued. On May 26, police fire investigators planned to board the vessel to determine the cause of the accident. The reason for the fire was still unclear.
Eight injured on burning freighter in Hamburg
On the afternoon of May 24, 2026, a fire broke out on the 'Jolyn' in the vicinity of the Small Grasbrook in the Kuhwerder Port of Hamburg. The Fire Department was alerted after smoke stsrtwd emanating from the ship, which gad berthed at warehouse 69-70 after its arrival from Humber. Upon the arrival of the first responding units, heavy smoke was already clearly visible billowing from the stern section of the vessel. At that point, the ship's crew had already initiated initial firefighting measures. As the operation progressed, it was determined that a fire had broken out within the ship's cargo hold. The Fire Department immediately launched a comprehensive firefighting operation, utilising multiple hose lines, with personnel operating under respiratory protection. Several operational sectors were established to manage firefighting efforts, emergency medical services, and logistics. The Incident Commander escalated the alarm level, triggering the mobilisation of a large-scale contingent of fire and emergency medical personnel. Water supply for the operation was provided, in part, by the fireboat "Branddirektor Westphal." Additionally, divers were deployed to ensure the safety of the responding personnel. In total, eight people sustained serious injuries. Seven of them were transported to nearby hospitals by the Hamburg Emergency Medical Service. Among the injured was a firefighter who suffered serious injuries while engaged in the firefighting operations. One person remained at the scene following on-site emergency medical treatment. Following the successful containment of the fire, extensive mop-up operations and inspections of the affected area were conducted. Final thermal readings indicated that temperatures within the affected zone had returned to safe levels. Upon the conclusion of these measures, the incident scene was handed over to the Hamburg Police for further investigations into the cause of the fire. In total, the Professional Fire Department Hamburg, the Volunteer Fire Department, and the Hamburg Emergency Medical Service deployed approximately 80 personnel for a duration of roughly three hours.
