Divers inspected tanker hull
An inspection in Burgas Bay found a small crack in the hull of rhe ' Kairos' about 1.5 metres above the waterline. Divers found no holes below the waterline of the tanker, which was hit by a drone and was anchored in Burgas Bay. Stoyan Dimitrov, head of the "Friends of the Sea – Burgas" association, who took part in the inspection, said that no fuel or lubricants are leaking from the ship. No one had checked the hull below the waterline until start of October, and nothing was known about its condition. The association's divers used their own equipment. The Burgas regional administration and the Burgas Maritime Administration helped. Two teams of divers took part. One checked the anchor, which was lying at a depth of about 35–40 metres, and the anchor chain, about 150–200 metres long, which was resting on the seabed. The divers wanted to see whether the anchor system was damaged, as the ship has stayed in one place for a long time. The second team went around the whole hull, mostly the stern, where the drone hit the tanker, looking for damaged areas. It also checked other parts below the waterline. All the underwater work was filmed. Such checks will go on until a lasting solution is found for the ship. Regional governor Diko Dikov and Anestiev thanked the association and the crew of Maritime Administration rescue boat No. 2. Leaking Russian shadow fleet tanker tagged by Greenpeace
On Aug 10, Greenpeace activists marked the abandoned 'Kairos' of the Russian shadow fleet, anchored off the coast of Burgas, with a huge inscription. The activists wrote a message NO GAS + OIL in protest against the toxic dependence on oil and gas, which finances wars, fuels corruption and puts marine ecosystems and local communities at risk. The action took place just three days after the 'Arctic Sunrise' had documented a leak from the 'Kairos', and a few weeks after “Greenpeace“ – Bulgaria revealed data on dozens of oil slicks around the ship. Activists from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Spain, the USA and the Philippines joined the protest. "We, the citizens, are paying for this toxic dependence - some through unbearable bills, others - with our lives. It also puts the Black Sea in danger. Whether they come from tankers or platforms, oil and gas cause pollution and threaten marine ecosystems and coastal communities that rely on the sea for their livelihoods. But we do not have a second Black Sea. That is why we insist on its protection“, commented Martin Tomov, coordinator of the campaign “Live Black Sea without oil and gas“ at “Greenpeace“ – Bulgaria. “The situation in the Black Sea is critical. It is one of the fastest warming seas in the world. Its ecosystems are under constant pressure – from pollution to fossil gas extraction. Meanwhile, dozens of tankers from the Russian shadow fleet, such as “Kairos“, sail in its waters. Old and dangerous vessels that carry polluting fuels, dump oil waste and end up abandoned along the coast, as if the sea were a garbage dump, said Meglena Antonova, director of “Greenpeace“ – Bulgaria. The 'Kairos' was hit in November 2025, while returning empty to the port of Novorossiysk. A Turkish tug pulled it into Bulgarian territorial waters, which caused a diplomatic scandal and led to the Turkish ambassador being summoned for official explanations. Subsequently, the Bulgarian Navy conducted an operation to evacuate the crew of the ship and managed to anchor the vessel in front of Burgas, where it has been left to this day. Oil slick appeared to be coming from tanker
Officials in Bulgaria denied reports of a persistent oil slick emanating from the hulk of the sanctioned 'Kairos', that was badly damaged by a Ukrainian drone attack north of Turkey on Nov 28, 2025. A large fire had damaged the bridge and accommodation block. The engine room was at least partially flooded. Turkish authorities had responded and assisted with the evacuation of the vessel, which was later taken under tow. After 10 days, it was towed to a more secure location in Burgas Bay. On Dec 5, the hulk of the tanker grounded on the Bulgarian coast with assertions that the Turkish tug towing the vessel had dumped it in Bulgarian waters.Greenpeace Bulgaria, however, released a satellite series of images calling for a full investigation into the source of the oil slick that appeared to be coming from the wrecked tanker. Reports of the oil slick emerged last week, when the Nessebar Public Council reported the situation and demanded government action. Nessebar was located approximately 20 nautical miles north of Bargas Bay, where the tanker has been anchored since Dec 2025 Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry coordinated with the Maritime Administration to conduct a survey of the tanker. They reported on July 22, 2026, that two inspections had taken place in a radius of 1.5 nautical miles from the tanker. and no slick was spotted, but they located individual coloured spots, which were treated with dispersant. A survey of the hull also showed no active leaks. The tanker was reported to be registered in Gambia and owned by a Chinese company. The European Union listed the vessel in its sanctions program in May 2025, and the UK added the vessel to its sanctions in July 2025, with both citing the vessel’s repeated involvement with the Russian oil trade.
