Five injured when Freon refrigerant gas leaked

Five crew members were injured when Freon refrigerant gas leaked from the 'Kaltan', which was docked for repairs at a shipyard in Gamcheon-dong, Saha-gu, Busan, on Sep 15, 2026. Two of the injured were transported to a hospital while receiving emergency treatment in cardiac arrest but have recovered spontaneous circulation. The other three reportedly suffered relatively minor injuries. The Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters was alerted at about 8:37 a.m. The accident was presumed to have occurred during work related to the refrigerant in the vessel's internal cold storage. There were 15 people on board at the time. Aside from the five in the cold storage, the remaining ten were in cabins on the vessel. The fire authorities believed that a chlorofluorocarbon-based refrigerant gas had leaked from the cold storage. The gas itself is relatively low in toxicity, but, if released in large quantities in an enclosed space, can lower oxygen levels and cause asphyxiation. The rire authorities and police have deployed about 40 personnel to check the interior and surroundings of the vessel in case of additional patients while investigating the exact cause of the accident and the circumstances of the gas leak. Four dead after fire off Ulsan

The 'Kaltan' caught fire en route from Busan to Russia in the morning of April 21, 2023, about 28 nautical miles southeast of Ulsan, 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, . The Ulsan Coast Guard responded with patrol vessels and SAR ships. Of the 25 crew members on board, 21 were rescued, four went missing. While firefighting was started, the search for the missing men continued despite worsening weather. The heavily damaged and still blazing vessel could be towed to Ulsan and berthed, where firefighters immediately attended, and then the bodies of the four missing were found on board the ship. All crew members were Russian nationals. The Far East transport prosecutors' office launched an investigation into the accident.
