Tanker towed towards Larak and spilling oil
The 'Kavomaleas', which was struck by an unknown projectile at a position near Kumzar on July 20, appeared to have been towed to the north side of the Strait of Hormuz on July 21, close to Larak (26.76505, 56.30703.) where it was likely in Iranian custody. The area south of Larak is under the control of the IRGC Navy, located near its preferred shipping lane in and out of the Arabian Gulf. A large oil spill seemed to be emanating from the vessel's port side, trailing off to the east. The operator Dynacom had reported that the 'Kavomaleas' was hit twice, resulting in an uncontrolled fire in the engine room. The crew members attempted to put it out with the fixed firefighting system, but they were unsuccessful. The vessel was left adrift after they were rescued by a tug, and any friendly salvage tug attempting to reach could have faced serious risk of Iranian attack. Dynacom had not approved any towing operation and was working to verify the ship's whereabouts.
