Wreck of yacht raised three months after collision

Mon Sep 28 08:23:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

More than three months after the collision of the 'Krili Eclipse' with a charter yacht in the Splitska Vrata strait between the islands of Brač and Šolta, the wreckage of the Beneteau Oceanis 56.1 was recovered by a crane barge on Sep 27 under challenging conditions. The yacht was lying on at a depth of approximately 60 meters. The complex recovery operation was carried out by the Split-based company Krka Sub Maris. Divers first inspected the wreck at a depth of about 60 meters. Subsequently, special lifting straps and chains were positioned beneath the hull. Using a heavy-duty crane mounted on a work pontoon, the vessel was then slowly lifted to the surface. Following the recovery, the yacht was placed onto the deck of a work vessel. The stern area of the yacht was almost completely destroyed. The deck and other structural components also sustained massive damage. The visible damage provided an indication of the immense force of the collision with the passenger catamaran, in which four of eight Czech nationals on board lost their lives. The wreckage was to undergo examinations for investigation purposes after the salvage. The recovery was carried out by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Split. The wreckage was transported to the northern port of Split, where maritime experts conducted a detailed examination of the ship. The wreckage could provide important clues for the investigators. Among other things, the position and condition of the steering system, rudder, instruments, and other technical equipment were to be examined. Damage to the hull could also prove crucial in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the accident. 1st officer not feeling guilty for fatal accident

Thu Jun 25 10:47:57 CEST 2026 Timsen

According to the Split Public Prosecutor's Office (ŽDO), the catamaran's first officer was suspected of being responsible for the fatal accident with a yacht on June 14. The accused steered the catamaran without the radar monitoring and alarm systems activated. Furthermore, he failed to take all necessary safety precautions to avoid the sailboat with the seven Czech passengers and their 65-year-old skipper. He did not keep a constant eye on the waterway and the surrounding ships and therefore did not notice the sailboat approaching from the starboard side in time. The catamaran was also said to have been traveling too fast. The officer may be facing a prison sentence of between three and 15 years. The 1st officer's lawyer pointed out that no formal charges, either for a misdemeanor or a crime, had yet been brought against his client. He did not consider himself guilty and did not cause the accident. So far, there would be no well-founded suspicion that he caused the accident through his actions. He has been in pretrial detention since June 18.

First officer of catamaran ferry arrested

Fri Jun 19 11:04:57 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 1st officer of the 'Krilo Eclipse' has been arrested on June 17. The investigators were examining whether or not he failed to take action despite allegedly having a clear view of the sailing boat before the collision in Splitska Vrata, the narrow channel between the islands of Šolta and Brač. The police arrested the 33-year-old man on suspicion of a serious offence against maritime traffic safety. Prosecutors suspected that safety rules were violated and that the failure to take appropriate action contributed to the deaths. The investigation is focused on whether proper manoeuvres were taken to avoid the accident. If convicted, the officer could face between three and 15 years in prison. Further questions remained about the chain of responsibility on the catamaran. There were indications that the captain was not on the bridge at the moment of impact, while the 1st officer was among those responsible for navigation. The investigators continued to determine whether any other individuals were bearing responsibility. Among the four victims was a married couple from the Czech Republic, Jiřina and Petr from the town of Bolatice in the Opava region. The couple left behind two daughters and grandchildren. he skipper of the sailboat has left Croatia following the accident. Plans were being developed to raise the sunken yacht and recover remaining debris from the seabed as part of the investigation.
