Tug scuttled off Mar de Plata
With favourable weather conditions, the controlled sinking of the “Kyokko Rúa” was successfully completed, thus strengthening tourism and marine research in the area off the coast of Mar del Plata on Oct 30. The carefully planned maneuver took place during a spell of good weather, allowing the tugboat to be moved to the outer bank of the “Cristo Rey” Underwater Park. The “Kyokko Rúa” became the fourth vessel sunk in less than five years as part of the underwater park expansion project, which already includes the “Simbad,” “Sirius,” and “Ribazón Dorine” in order to promote scuba diving tourism, create new habitats for marine life, and serve as a site for scientific research on biological colonization processes in artificial structures. Thre tug was decommissioned two years ago and had undergone a comprehensive cleanup and partial dismantling of its internal structures at the Naval Base to ensure a safe and environmentally responsible sinking. The sinking was supervised by the Argentine Naval Prefecture, which approved the operational plan and verified the decontamination work, the removal of engines and equipment, and the structural lightening carried out by the company Navaltec. The patrol boat 'GC 66' was on site during the last voyage. The “Kyokko Rúa” was scuttled on the outer bank of the Underwater Park. The tug first settled deeper and then heeled sharply to starboard side, before went down stern first and settled on even keel at a depth of 24 to 25 meters, where a natural process of marine colonization will begin, turning its hull into a habitat for diverse species. This initiative, in addition to promoting recreational and scientific diving, helps free up operational space in the port's inner docks, complementing the dismantling and reorganization programs carried out by the Regional Port Consortium. With this latest sinking, Mar del Plata consolidates its position as a national leader in the development of artificial underwater parks, combining naval history, environmental preservation, and the promotion of marine tourism. Decommissioned tug to be scuttled

Cleaned of hydrocarbons, its hull lightened after part of its internal structures were scrapped at the Naval Base, the tug was waiting d for its final transfer to the Cristo Rey Submarine Park, where the controlled sinking will take place. The ship, which has been inactive for two years, arrived at the port almost ten years ago enroute from Quequén, to assist vessels as a backup for the "Cuarteador", until renewing the certificate proved too expensive, and the owner Rua decided to donate it to be transformed into a new underwater attraction. The sinking plan was approved by the Argentine Naval Prefecture, which supervised the cleaning of hydrocarbons from the tanks, dismantling of equipment and engines, and the cutting of the hull to lighten its structure, carried out by Navaltec.
