Barge no longer threatened to sink
The 'Labe 15', which had sprung a leak at the lock in Dörverden in the Verden district on the morning of Oct 15, was no longer threatened to sink, and no oil leaked into the Weser River. After divers found and patched the leak, The vessel was being pumped out using the 'Bilgenentöler 4' (MMSI: 211506890), which had been nearby by chance. Water had also leaked into the engine room, where it was contaminated with oil. The oil-water mixture had to be pumped in special containers to prevent environmental damage. Divers were in the water until midday to locate the leak. The Weser remained closed to shipping in the area of the lock. The vessel was transporting a cargo of sand and grit. It was secured downstream of the Dörverden lock, and the situation appeared to be stable on the evening. The temporarily closed stretch could be reopened on the afternoon, but captains should remain vigilant. Passing vessels were advised to exercise particular caution in the area where the damaged vessel is berthed to avoid wave action. The extent of the damage was unclear. On Oct 16 an expert inspected the leak. He was tasked with determining whether and how the damage could be repaired so far that the "Labe 15" could be able sail to the nearest shipyard, where the damage would be be permanently repaired. The ship remained stationary at the lock as of Oct 20. Barge threatened to sink in Dörverden
A major salvage operation was started at Weser Lock in Dörverden as the 'Labe 15', en route from Nienburg to Bremen, was in danger of sinking due to a water ingress on Oct 15, 2025, at around noon in pos. 52° 52' N 009° 13' E. Firefighters and boats responded to the scene. The water was contaminated with oil from the engine room. The emergency services were working to prevent environmental damage. The crew was evacuated from the vessel without injury. Emergency crews were setting up oil booms to prevent the contaminated water from spreading. The waterway was closed for shipping traffic. On scene were the Dörverden, Stedorf, Barme, Verden, and Hoya fire departments,, along with the Verden DLRG (German Life Saving Association), the German Red Cross (DRK), the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the police, and the Nienburg Water Police, with a total of around 120 personnel. When the water level in the vessel was prevented from rising further due to the pumps deployed, and thus there was no longer danger of sinking, the coordination of the response was transferred to the Waterways and Shipping Authority. The Authority initiated further measures to remove the water and determine the cause of the water ingress. After several attempts, DLRG divers discovered the leak in the foreship. The water had penetrated a small living area and spread from there throughout the vessel.
