Ship adrift at sea with crew in degrading condition
The Brasilian authorities have launched an investigation into the 'Latifa', that was found adrift off the coast of Brasil last week. The ship docked at the Amapá Port Authority (CPAP) on April 15, 2026. The crew, including a Belgian national, lived in degrading conditions, with insufficient food and drink and poor hygiene. The Brasilian public prosecutor's office in Amapá spoke conditions comparable to slavery. The 'Latifa' had departed from Cartagena in late March bound for Montevideo. During the voyage, the ship suffered a serious mechanical damage, causing it to lose propulsion and started to drift. After days adrift, it eventually ended up near the coast of the state of Amapá. Following a distress call, the Brasilian Navy launched a rescue operation. The patrol ship ‘Bocaina’ was dispatched to the ship. During an initial inspection by various authorities, it quickly became clear that the situation on board was serious. The Brasilian immagration offfice was currently investigating, among other things, incidents of a criminal nature. The Public Prosecution Service for Labor Affairs (MPT) has also launched a civil investigation into the conditions on board. Interrogations reveal that the crew was subjected to degrading working and living conditions. For instance, there was a prolonged shortage of food, drinking water, and electricity. Hygienic conditions were particularly poor, including insect infestations on board. The crew also suffered from severe physical and psychological stress.
