Seized tankers may be heading to US
The 'Tifani' and 'Majestic X', which were both interdicted by American naval forces in the Iran War, were just weeks away from reaching the US, where authorities have pledged to seize the vessels and millions of dollars worth of crude that they’re transporting. The tankers have skirted the coast of Brasil over the past week. A third interdicted tanker was heading west into the Atlantic after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. The seizures captivated the market at the time as the US imposed a strict blockade on Iran’s oil exports. The ships initially changed direction multiple times in the Indian Ocean, and it was unclear where they would eventually go. In April, the Justice Department had initiated a forfeiture process against the 'Tifani' and 'Majestic X', which was also known as Phonix. The ships were boarded near Sri Lanka earlier that month. Law enforcement agents executed federal warrants to seize the tankers and the roughly four million barrels of Iranian oil they had been carrying. The third tanker, known as 'Lenore' and 'Davina', was intercepted in the Indian Ocean in June. Based on the precedent of US actions in Venezuela, the ships will likely go to the US. If they sailed to a US port, they would mark the first Iranian oil to reach American shores since consignments brought under an earlier forfeiture process in 2023, data from the Energy Information Administration show. Around that time, the US ordered a tanker carrying China-bound Iranian crude to divert to the US. In past cases where tankers have been seized, the US administration has attempted to sell the captured vessels and oil for a profit. To make that possible, the Justice Department has employed asset forfeiture as a legal tool to seize property said to be linked to criminal activity, often through proceedings against the asset itself rather than an individual.
Crew of seized tanker and castaway repatriated
Pakistan has received 22 Iranian crew members from the 'Lenore' and coordinated their return to Iran. On the afternoon of June 26 they safely arrived in the port of Karachi, and arrangements were made with Iranian officials to send them home as soon as possible. They were received by officials from Pakistan’s Foreign Office. After completing emergency entry formalities, they were taken to the Iranian Consulate in Karachi. Pakistan remained in close contact with both US and Iranian authorities throughout the process. It was the 4th group of Iranian crew members whose return has been facilitated by Pakistan over the past two months. Pakistan has now helped repatriate more than 70 Iranian nationals, including the latest group of 22. Pakistan also helped to repatriate eight Iranian fishermen who were rescued at sea by the British m/v 'MMA Valour', after their boat had run aground. Together with the 22 crew members from the 'Lenore', Pakistan facilitated the return of 30 Iranian nationals.
Tanker intercepted off Sri Lanka
On the night of June 5, 2026, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command have carried out another interdiction of a stateless tanker in the Indian Ocean, the 'Lenore' (formerly the 'Davina'), which was reported to have been attempting to hide approximately 20 nautical miles southwest of Sri Lanka. Naval personnel and special forces from the mobile landing platform ship USS 'John L. Canley (ESB-6)' boarded the tanker aobut 20 nautical miles southwest of Sri Lanka, where it had reportedly been hiding for a month and a half. The vessel was found to be carrying 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude oil, loaded at Iran’s Kharg Island terminal on March 20, just before the U.S. enforced the naval blockade of Iranian ports. The ship was claiming a registry in Curacao. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) said that it was sailing under a false Curacaoan flag and had used a false registry from Palau to evade sanctions before. The vessel was listed as having been sold in October 2024 to unknown buyers and operators. The USA had sanctioned the tanker in October 2024 for its continuous involvement in Iranian oil smuggling operations. The tanker had shipped roughly 20 million barrels of illicit oil over the past two years.
