Seized tankers sold for scrap
The US government has sold two sanctioned oil tankers, the 'Lileo' and the 'Era', for scrapping in India, Lloyd’s List reported, according to Reuters on August 11. The Dubai-based ship recycling firm Global Marketing Systems (GMS) acquired the vessels in July. The 'Era' was seized by the US Coast Guard and military special forces in January after a weeks-long pursuit across the Atlantic, with the operation taking place south of Iceland. The tanker had previously evaded a US blockade in the Caribbean intended to curb Venezuelan oil exports. The USA also seized the Russian-flagged 'Veronica', now operating as 'Lileo' in the Caribbean Sea in January. The vessel had been targeted by US sanctions over its links to Russia.

US seized sixth tanker
Early on Jan 15, 2026, the U.S. Coast Guard boarded the 'Veronica', in the Caribbean Sea. The ship had previously left Venezuelan waters. US Marines and sailors launched from the aircraft carrier USS 'Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78)' to take part in the operation alongside a Coast Guard tactical team, which conducted the boarding as in previous raids. The ship was seized without incident. The Coast Guard Cutter 'Mohawk (WMEC 913)' transited near the 'Veronica', after its was anchored off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico, on Jan. 18. The 'Veronica' was the sixth sanctioned tanker seized by U.S. forces. The tanker had last transmitted its location on Jan. 3 as being at anchor off the coast of Aruba, just north of Venezuela’s main oil terminal. According to the data it transmitted at the time, it was partially filled with crude. The ship was listed as flying the flag of Guyana and considered to be part of the shadow fleet that moves cargoes of oil in violation of U.S. sanctions. The ship also has been known as the 'Gallileo', owned and managed by a company in Russia. In addition, a tanker with the same registration number previously sailed under the names 'Pegas' and 'Lana' and was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for moving cargoes of illicit Russian oil. It was seized by Greek authorities in 2022 and has a history of moving sanctioned Russian and Iranian oil.
