Bulk carrier broke in two in Bandar Abbas after collision
On July 14, 2026, the 'Luni', carrying 23 crew members and a cargo of 43000 tons steel billets, owned by the Mersin-based Lora Shipping, while being moored at an anchorage in the northern portion of the Strait of Hormuz just off Bandar Abbas, suffered water ingress and subsequently split in half. The captain ordered the crew to abandon ship, which finally broke in two and sank amidships with bow and stern pointing upwards. All crew members were safely evacuated and transported to Qeshm Island. A pilot boat and a tug were dispatched to the scene in coordination with the Hormuzgan Province Maritime SAR Center to assist. The 'Luni' had been involved in a collision with another vessel several days earlier, which allegedly damaged its hull. The suffered damage and deterioration of the structural integrity was believed to have led to the subsequent flooding and structural failure. While U.S. forces have been conducting heavy strikes in the Bandar Abbas area, no kinetic incident affecting the 'Luni' has been reported. The authorities have not yet officially determined the cause of the collision, and an investigation was underway.
