Tanker attacked off Novorossiysk

Mon Mar 16 12:03:37 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Maran Homer' with 24 crew members on board, was struck by a suspected drone or small missile off the Russian port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea on the early morning of March 14, 2026. The vessel, owned and operated by Maran Tankers Management, which is a division of the Greek maritime conglomerate Angelicoussis Shipping Group, had sailed from the port of Thessaloniki. At the time of the incident, the tanker was operating under a charter with the energy corporation Chevron. It was sailing without cargo when the attack occurred approximately 14 nautical miles off Novorossiysk. The Athens-based company Maran Tankers Management explained that the 'Maran Homer' was struck by an unidentified object just outside Russian territorial waters, awaiting instructions to proceed to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) oil terminal in Novorossiysk to load a cargo of Kazakh crude oil, The ship's deck and deck equipment suffered minor material damage. All crew members, among them ten Greeks, 13 Filipinos, and one Romanian national, were safe and unharmed. The ship suffered damage to its starboard side and was navigating away from the immediate area of the strike. The exact nature of the projectile remained under investigation, though preliminary assessments point to a small missile or an unmanned aerial vehicle.
