Recovered body identified
The body recovered from the capsized 'Mariana' has been identified as crew member Chet Brochon and his family has been notified, Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. CEO Esther L. Muna told on May 6. Efforts to identify the recovered crew member included DNA collection coordinated by CHCC, which assisted the medical examiner who traveled to Saipan from Hawaii. CHCC asked family members on Saipan and Guam on May 2 to provide DNA samples, including buccal cheek swabs, and to bring government-issued identification.Five other crew members of the vessel have not been located and were presumed dead. The missing seafarers were: - Captain Frederick “Fred” Nosek Jr.; - Landon Delos Reyes: - Mohammed Rahaman; - Jose Ramirez: - Vincent Agulto. The search was called off on April 29, after the operations covered more than 135,000 square nautical miles. Families of the missing crew members continue to push for expanded search efforts beyond U.S. waters, asking the Outer Island of Japan Coast Guard to assist. They agreed to do a flyby. Japan Coast Guard officials said on May 5 that surveillance operations remained ongoing over a wide area of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from east of Hokkaido to south of Honshu, using aircrafts and other assets. Search for missing crew suspended
On April 27, the Coastguard expanded the search for the missing crew members of the 'Mariana'. Recognising the possibility that the crew might have reached land, the USCG and its partners conducted massive aerial sweeps of the open ocean and scoured the shorelines of remote, uninhabited islands within the Northern Mariana chain. On April 28 at 10:35 p.m., the USCG made the decision to suspend active search operations. Duribg over 100 hours of active searching, more than 135,000 square nautical miles were covered.
Search for crew continued
The U.S. Coast Guard and partners continued theirsearch efforts for the missing crew members of the 'Mariana'. These searches focussed on a large area in the vicinity of where the vessel was discovered, using set and drift models to calculate the possibilities of where debris and objects, such as a life raft, may have drifted. Set and drift calculations were critical because they project a target’s position from its last known location to where it wass most likely going to be, allowing crews to define a probability-based search area. In addition to searching a wide expanse of ocean, Coast Guard and partner aircrews have conducted aerial searches of the following islands: * Farallon de Pajaros * Agrihan * Pagan * Alamagan * Guguan * Maug Islands * Asuncion * Sarigan * Anatahan * Zealandia Bank The search continued on April 26.
