Collision near Mehrum

On Dec 4, 2025, at 2 p.m. the inland vessel 'Lee' (MMSI: 211470900), enroute from Sachsenhagen to Salzgitter, was in collision with the 'Marino', en route from Vahldorf, on the Mittelland Canal west of Mehrum (Peine district), which was loaded with rapeseed and began taking on water. The Mehrum and Hohenhameln volunteer fire departments were alerted for reconnaissance and hazard mitigation. The 'Marino' entered the port of the Raiffeisen agricultural cooperative in Mehrum, in coordination with the police, the water police, and the Waterways and Shipping Administration, and moored at the Sehnde South Berth. Firefighters from the Sehnde fire brigade, which was alerted at 3.15 p.m. deployed boats, pumps, and diving teams from Lehrte and Burgdorf to prevent the vessel from sinking. Also the fire brigade from Bolzum was mobilised. The freighter had a crushed bow and a leak of 20x20 centimetres below the waterline, which could be patched with an inflatable sealed by the evening. Simultaneously, the water was pumped out with submersible pumps, and after the pumps could cope with the flooding, the bow raised about one metre, bringing the major leak above the water line. Two smaller leaks, which could not be reached from inside, were also temproarily sealed by the divers. After the ship's own pumps were able to keep the remaining water ingress under control, the fire fighters could be stood down at 8.15 p.m. No pollutants leaked into the canal. The water police was now investigating the cause of the accident. The 'Lee' berthed in the port of Mehrum.
