CTL fetched its owner a war-risk insurance payout of almost $11 million
The 'Mayuree Naree' fetched its owner, the Precious Shipping, a war-risk insurance payout of almost $11 million. The ship had suffered severe fire damage after it was struck by two projectiles of unknown origin on March 11, just after it had crossed the Strait of Hormuz en route from the Dubai Anchorage to the Deendayal Port in Gujarat, and ran aground off Iran's Qeshm Island on March 27, where it has remained ever since, and due to which it was declared a constructive total loss. The Thai owners of the ship reported in an Aug 7 earnings call that the roughly $11 million payout included the full insured value of the vessel at $ 9.5 million, as well as a number of reimbursements. This included the compensation that the Precious Shipping had paid to the relatives of three of the crew members who died after the attack, as well as the expenses and contractual payments made to the 20 crew members who were rescued and repatriated to Thailand. The war-risk insurers were now trying to sell the bulk carrier on an "as-is-where-is basis", with all proceeds to go to the latter. As of Sep 12, the ship was still awaiting its fate, aground in shallow waters off Qeshm Island, with its port side anchor down and a large hole in its hull near the propeller, towered by the fire-blackened, gutted superstructure. Labour Court accepted claim by former crew members
On July 10, the Thai labour court accepted a claim filed by three crew membees of the ' Mayuree Naree'. Their lawyer stated that they were seeking damages following a deadly attack on the ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The claim sought a comprnsation of at least $30,000 per sailor from companies and agencies linked to the shipowner, the Precious Shipping Ltd., and the vessel's captain. The sailors accused their employers of taking them into dangerous zones, thereby putting their lives at risk and rendering them unfit to return to work. All three have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. To date, the sailors have received two months' wages as well as a compensation for the value of their lost personal belongings.
Crew members filed lawsuit four months after attack
Three crew members of the 'Mayuree Naree' have filed a lawsuit against the vessel's owner and captain. They were aboard the 'Mayuree Naree' on March 11, when the ship was struck in an Iranian attack that killed three crew members. The three crew members, who filed the lawsuit in Bangkok on July 10, were dismissed following the incident and were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to their lawyer. They contended that the company was negligent in sailing the ship through the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict. After war broke out in the Middle East in late February, Iran blocked the strait. In the ensuing two weeks, 16 ships were attacked, including the Thai vessel.
