On April 30, the 'Mersin', after having been temporarily patched, finally left the port of Dakar, being towed by the tug 'Iraklis' (IMO: 9764465). The tanker was destined to Yalova with an ETA as of June 14 for further inspections.
Response to damaged tanker completed
The Port Authority of Dakar has announced the completion of operations related to the "Mersin", which left the port on May 8. The port authority outlined the various steps taken to secure the vessel and then allow its departure to Aliaga with an ETA as of May 30. The port authorities initiated and supervised the various phases of the intervention, including an investigation and securing of the vessel, the sealing of breaches, and the draining of the engine room. These operations were carried out in collaboration with the Senegalese Navy, under the coordination of the High Authority for Maritime Security, Safety, and Marine Environmental Protection (HASSMAR) and the National Maritime Affairs Agency (ANAM). After the cargo was unloaded via transshipment, the vessel was finally towed to its home port on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. No environmental damage was observed during the maritime incident, and all required administrative procedures were followed.
Unloading has commenced
The Port Authority of Dakar provided an update on April 13 regarding the ongoing operations on the 'Mersin'. The maritime authorities assured that the interventions were continuing according to the established plan, under the coordination of the relevant agencies. A series of technical operations have already been successfully carried out, including the investigation and securing of the vessel, sealing the breaches in the engine room and draining the engine room. These actions were conducted in close collaboration with the Senegalese Navy, the High Authority for Maritime Safety (HASSMAR), and the National Agency for Maritime Affairs (ANAM). The unloading of the cargo began on April 6 through transshipment. This step was considered crucial to definitively eliminate the risk of pollution to the marine environment. The next phase of operations was already being focused on towing the vessel. Once the unloading has been completed, the arrangements for its towing to its home port for repairs were to be finalised with the owners. The various entities involved remained fully committed to carrying out this operation, with safety and the protection of the marine environment as their top priorities.
