Fire in sleep cabin caused major response of fire brigades
A fire in a sleeping quarter on the 'Mirela', with five people and a cargo of 400 tonsof sheet metal coils on board, triggered a major response from the Regensburg Fire Department, which was alerted at 9:27 p.m., at Grießer Spitz on July 27, 2026. The ship's crew had already begun initial firefighting efforts before the fire department arrived. Subsequently, all crew members were evacuated from the ship as a precaution. The Regensburg Fire Department and the Weichs volunteer fire brigade, with two teams wearing breathing apparatus, carried out extensive follow-up extinguishing work. This required opening up wall paneling and wooden ceilings to locate and completely extinguish hidden embers. Only then could the fire be declared out. In addition to the Regensburg Fire Department, the Oberisling Volunteer Fire Department, the Sallern and Weichs volunteer fire brigades, the Regensburg Water Rescue Service (including the Water Rescue Service and the German Life Saving Association (DLRG)), the ambulance service, the ambulance service incident commander, and the police were involved in the response. The water rescue service secured the fire department's operation with two boats and ensured the safety of the emergency personnel on the water throughout the entire operation. During the response, available personnel from the Oberisling Volunteer Fire Department took over staffing duties at the main fire station, thus ensuring basic fire protection for the city. The firefighting operation concluded before midnight. One crew member had suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Regensburg hospital as a precaution for further examination. The cause of the fire was under investigation. The affected cabin was completely destroyed by the fire. Two adjacent cabins were significantly damaged by smoke and heat. Since the damage was limited exclusively to the rear section of the cargo ship and the bow section was not affected by fire or smoke, the crew was able to return on board. It was believed a technical defect was the cause of the fire. A fire investigator from the Regensburg police started to determine the exact cause. The public prosecutor's office has also been informed as a routine procedure. The crew of the ship, which had sailed from Bratislava, had regularly checked the onboard electronics according to regulations. They estimated the damage at approximately €150,000. The ship's voyage was initially prohibited and was to be reviewed again on July 28. https://www.mittelbayerische.de/lokales/stadt-regensburg/schiffsbrand-auf-der-donau-in-regensburg-sorgt-fuer-grosseinsatz-der-feuerwehr-21658256 https://www.br.de/nachrichten/bayern/ermittler-feuer-auf-frachtschiff-wohl-durch-technischen-defekt,VQe4vOW https://www.regensburg.de/feuerwehr/aktuelle-informationen/einsatzberichte/337772/616216/27-juli-2026-brand-auf-einem-frachtschiff.html
