Ship grounded twice on the Waal

The 'Mokum', enroute from Nijmegen to Rudow, ran aground briefly on the Waal river on the early afternoon of Aug 19, 2026. It got stuck near the Oversteek bridge, managed to free itself and sailed towards Rotterdam. Two hours later, the same ship got stuck again. This time it was heading towards Germany and could not get past the narrow channel near the Snelbinder bridge in Nijmegen. On this occasion, another ship, the 'Silvia', was needed to guide the 'Mokum' through the shipping channel. Both ships maneuvered back and forth a few times. The river's water level remained low. Despite some rain, the depth of the Waal between the Maas-Waal Canal and Spijk was 1.40 meters. A minor traffic jam formed near the bridge. Once the 'Silvia' and 'Mokum' had passed underneath, the other ships continued on their way.
