Cargo ship suffered water ingress in Andernach
On Feb 23, 2026, at approximately 11:50 a.m., the Andernach Water Police Station was informed by the Koblenz Integrated Control Center that the 'Mon Desir', loaded with road salt had sprung a leak in the Andernach harbour basin. The damage occurred in the area of the aft cargo hold, while a port operator was unloading the cargo. As a result, water entered the hold. Fire departments from the region attended on scene. Additionally, personnel from the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the German Red Cross were present as a precaution. Divers were also at the scene to repair the leak. To prevent the ship from sinking, the water-salt mixture was pumped out of the hold. It was collected under controlled conditions and then pumped into containers. A representative from the lower water authority was on site. Port operations could continue with minor restrictions. The 'Mon Desir' was allowed to leave the port of Andernach, after the breach had been welded, on Feb 24 and proceeded towards Tiel with an ETA as of Feb 25.
