Sunken longliner raised in Arrecife
The 'Monte Arballu' was raised on Oct 7, eight days after it sank on Sep 29 in the port of Arrecife (Lanzarote) due to an unrepaired leak. Firefighters from the Lanzarote emergency services participated in the salvage operation, using several pumps to remove water. Two mobile cranes were deployed to bring the longliner back to the surface. The vessel was then defueled and towed to a shipyard. The Las Palmas port authority laid out an oil barrier as a precaution to prevent a water pollution, but this proved unnecessary. Built in 1965, the 'Monte Arballu' was one of six tuna fishing vessels that once belonged to Lanzarote's traditional purse seiner fleet, which at one time comprised around 30 ships, alongside the 'Santuario Barquereño', 'Zeruko Eregiña', 'Izar Aklde', 'Cima de Oro' and the 'Ave Maria II'. Arrecife City Council and the Port Authority of Las Palmas coordinated response to oil spill
The Arrecife City Council and the Port Authority of Las Palmas coordinated the response to a diesel spill from the 'Monte Arballu' at the Naos dock on Oct 1, which had triggered a pre-alert from the Plateca network for marine pollution and mobilizing municipal collaboration. The Port Authority of Las Palmas informed the Arrecife City Council that there are no apparent risks of marine pollution that could affect the bay following the sinking of the tuna fishing vessel. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has been in direct contact with the director of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Francisco Javier Trujillo Ramírez. The objective was to learn the details of the deployment activated to control potential marine pollution and to assess the need to activate the Municipal Emergency Plan (PUMA) in response to the diesel spill from the fishing vessel, which could reach the bay of Arrecife and its beaches. The Canary Islands Government's Directorate General of Emergencies declared a pre-alert for the Plateca system on Sep 30, after the 'Monte Arballu' sank near the former Frigorsa factory, in the fishing area of Puerto de Naos. The ship was carrying approximately 10,000 liters of diesel fuel, and a fuel slick measuring approximately 30 by 15 meters has been detected. The Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) deployed marine pollution control barriers on the morning of Sep 30. The mayor had expressed concern about the potential spread of the diesel spill towards Arrecife Bay, where several beaches were located. The mayor has requested that all necessary support be offered to the ship owner so that he received the assistance needed to refloat, repair, and could resume fishing operations. The City Council has offered the assistance of municipal personnel, coordinated by the Department of Security and Emergencies, headed by Councilor Kevin Cortés, to the Port Authority of Las Palmas and the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium.
Fishing vessel sank in Arrecife
The 'Monte Arballu' sank at the Naos cruise ship pier in the port of Arrecife due to a leakage with an uncontrolled water ingress on Sep 29, 2026. The SAR boats 'Salvamar Al Nair' and 'Salvamar Acrux' were mobilised by Salvamento Marítimo and deployed motor pumps to attempt to bail out the water, but the ship foundered alongside the dock. Only the masts and wheelhouse still protruded above the water. The Canary Islands Government's Directorate General of Emergencies activated the pre-alert of PLATECA at 1.05 p.m., the Canary Islands Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection, which allowed for increased monitoring and coordination in case the situation worsened. The fishing vessel had about 10 tons of diesel fuel in one of its tanks. For the moment, the spill appeared to be under control. Around midday, a fuel slick measuring approximately 30 meters long by 15 meters wide was detected. The Port Authority of Las Palmas at 1.27 p.m. activated its Maritime Emergency Plan and deployed two containment booms to prevent the fuel from spreading. The slick remained contained within these booms. Before the salvage, divers would first attempt to seal the hull of the longliner. There were no injuries as there were no crew members on board at the time of the incident.
