Container ship allided with jetty in Mundra

Tue Mar 24 13:13:37 CET 2026 Timsen

Due to a sudden change in weather and strong winds across Gujarat, a serious situation developed at Mundra Port in Kutch on March 19, 2026, when the 'MSC Alexandra', which was berthed at the CT3 terminal of Mundra Port, broke lose when the mooring ropes of the ship snapped, causing the vessel to drift out of control in the water, before it allided bow-first with a pier that was under construction. Workers ran from the waterfront ahead of the allision, and the container ship sounded its horn in warning before the impact. Not only the vessel, but several heavy cargo containers stacked at the port were blown away by the strong winds, with some containers overturning due to the intensity of the gusts. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the port administration immediately imposed a complete restriction on vehicle movement inside the port premises and instructed employees to move to safe locations. In 2016, the Iranian VLCC 'Dream II' had beein in collision with the 'MSC Alexandra' in the Singapore Strait. The tanker's bow struck the port quarter of the boxship, damaging it and sending ten containers over the side. In May 2024, Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed to have launched an attack on the 'MSC Alexandra', but no evidence of impact or damage was forthcoming. The vessel's rotation typically takes it through the Strait of Hormuz to Jebel Ali. As of Jan 24, the ship was still at anchor outside of Mundra Port in pos. 22° 40' N 069° 46' E, where it has been stuck since Feb 25 due to the hostilities in the Gulf region.
