Crew on seized ship doing well

Fri Apr 24 07:35:37 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Montenegrin sailors aboard the 'MSC Francesca', which was seized by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, for violating regulations and attempting to "secretly leave" the Strait of Hormuz, were doing well. Radullovic stated on April 23, that representatives of the Ministry of Shipping were in contact with the captain of the 'MSC Francesca', a Montenegrin citizen, and that he had confirmed that everyone on board was safe and in stable condition. The ship was anchored nine nautical miles off the Iranian coast. Negotiations between MSC and Iran were progressing positively. The Foreign Ministry was aware of the developments. They were also in contact with the shipping company. The Panamanian Foreign Ministry announced that the 'MSC Francesca' was “forcibly” moved into Iranian waters. Panama has accused Iran of violating international law, declaring the action a "serious attack on maritime security" and an "unnecessary escalation" of tensions. According to a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the 'MSC Francesca' and the 'Epaminondas' were detained for attempting to leave the Strait of Hormuz "secretly" and "without authorisation," as well as for "multiple violations and tampering with navigational aids, thereby endangering maritime safety." The Iranian Navy announced that the ships were transferred to Iranian territorial waters for inspection of their cargo and documents.

Container ships damaged by Iran despite permit to transit Strait of Hormuz

Thu Apr 23 11:29:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

On April 22, 2026, at 6.55 a.m. Greek time, the container ship 'Epaminondas' (IMO: 9153862) was fired upon without warning by a gunboat of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), causing significant damage to the vessel’s bridge, approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was approached by the gun boat, and while there was no VHF contact, it fired upon the vessel. No fires or environmental impact were reported. All crew were reported to be safe. The container ship had been informed that it had a permission to transit the strait before. Now the authorities were examining the authenticity of the passage approval message, including whether it may have been fraudulent. The ship was seized and was now to be taken to Iran. As of April 23, it was anchored in pos. 26° 57' N 056° 22' E. The UKMTO also has received a report of an incident eight nautical miles west of Iran. The 'Euphoria' (IMO: 9235828) was fired upon approximately eight nautical miles west of Iran at 6:38 a.m. UTC. The vessel had begun transiting the Strait of Hormuz outbound at 01:10 a.m. UTC with Jeddah listed as its destination. The crew was safe and accounted for. There was no reported damage to the vessel. As of April 23, it was anchored in pos. 25° 25' N 056° 37' E. A third ship was also targeted trying to transit the strait on April 22, the 'MSC Francesca', which was sailing about six nautical miles off the Iranian coast, heading southward out of the strait into the Gulf of Oman. The container ship was hailed by the IRGC and instructed to drop anchor. The ship reported damage to the hull and accommodation area. The ship was seized and was now to be taken to Iran. As of April 23, it was anchored in pos. 26° 29' N 056° 55' E. The UKMTO was aware of high levels of activity in the strait and encouraged vessels to report any suspicious activity.
