Oil leakage in Antwerp
On Sep 14, 2026, an oil pollution occurred around 3:00 p.m. near quay 1718 at the MPET terminal in Antwerp due to a leak on the 'MSC Renaissance III' after its arrival from Montreal. The Deurganck Dock had to be partially closed to shipping traffic. Ships on the Left Bank were diverted via the Kallo Lock instead of the Kieldrecht Lock wherever possible. Vessels in the area had to contact the Antwerp Coordination Center (ACC) for further instructions. The Port Authority continued to monitor the situation. Emergency services contained the pollution and sealed the ship's hull damage. By Sep 16, the quay wall was cleaned and released for use, with the vessel scheduled to depart for permanent repairs and shipping traffic resuming normal operations. The 'MSC Renaissance III' arrived in Le Havre on Sep 24 and sailed the next day, headed back to Montreal, where it arrived on Oct 4. Only in July, operations at the dock were halted for hours after a container holding hydrogen fluoride sprang a leak aboard the 'MSC Mia Summer II'; 155 workers were taken to the hospital as a result. In April, an oil leak during the bunkering of a container ship also led to a temporary shutdown. The University of Antwerp estimated the economic cost of that incident at over 10 million euros.
