Ship lost 17 containers off Colombo
17 empty containers fell into the water from the 'MSS Graphene' within the outer harbour limits of Colombo, approximately 17 nautical miles west of the port, on the early morning, of Aug 1, 2026. Rough sea conditions were believed to have caused the containers to tumble overboard. The vessel had departed Malé, Maldives, enroute to the Port of Colombo on July 28. Following the incident, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources issued an emergency alert regarding the drifting hazards. The prevailing ocean currents presented a high possibility that the containers could drift towards the coastline, particularly along the coastal stretch between Beruwala and Negombo. The Sri Lanka Navy has deployed craft to the area to monitor the situation and maintain continuous observation of the affected sea region. The MRCC Colombo has issued a navigational warning to alert all vessels operating in the vicinity. Local fishermen and mariners who spotted any of the drifting containers have been instructed to immediately notify the Radio Communication Centre of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or report to officials at the nearest fisheries harbour.
