Cargo ship suffered flooding in multiple compartments
The 'Sitthaa' suffered a cargo shift and flooding in multiple compartments whilst off Tiruchendur (Tamil Nadu) on June 27, 2026, and issued a distress call. The Indian Coast Guard responsed and deployed the 'Atulya', which rendered immediate assistance. A specialist boarding team coordinated with salvage experts, monitored emergency repairs and dewatering operations, ensuring the flooding remained under control. The vessel was advised to proceed back to the port of Tuticorin, where it had departed on June 24, for sustainable repairs with the Coast Guard maintaining close coordination with the Master, a salvage company and Port authorities to ensure the safety of the crew, vessel and marine environment. As of June 28, the ship was moored off Tuticorin. Improper lashing of cargo, combined with rough sea conditions, were thought to have contributed to the distress situation.
