Offshore ship was threatened to sink in Eemshaven
The 'Nautilus', moored in the Juliana Port of Eemshaven, started taking on water on Oct 5, 2026, at 6.50 p.m., and went down by the bow. The water ingress was caused by a leaking valve in the engine room and occurred while sailing. It was only discovered as the ship was entering the harbour. The power on board failed, and a burning smell was detected around the ship. The crew was mustered and left the ship onto the quay. Two people had to be checked by ambulance personnel, but were not taken to hospital. Emergency services and divers tried to prevent the vessel from capsizing and sinking. The divers conducted an inspection under the ship and sealed the leak. The ship was no longer taking on water. The Port operator Groningen Seaports handed the incident further. The fire department and the Groningen Safety Region engaged a private company to pump the water out, and at 11 p.m., the bow was rising again. The tugs 'Waterstraat' (IMO: 9428059) and 'Waterstroom' (IMO 9428047) meanwhile kept the ship stable. Rijkswaterstaat was called in because the surface water was in danger of becoming polluted. Everything was done to prevent large quantities of oil from ending up in the water. The ship had to remain in Eemshaven for the time being for investigations. After that, it would be determined where a repair may take place.
