Grounding near Hooghly Point
On Aug 12, 2026, at around 2 p.m. LT, the 'Nawata Bhum', enroute from Port Klang to Myasa Prasad Mokerjee Port in Kolkata with 483 containers on board, got its steering gear jammed while attempting to recover from a turn in a sharp river bend, during a turbulent high tide, caused by the new moon on the Hooghly River. It veered off course and plowed directly into the riverbank near the Nurpur Ferry Ghat, located in the Diamond Harbour area of the South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, about 50 km south of Kolkata, in an area right along the difficult navigation stretch close to Hooghly Point. The ship’s master sounded the horn repeatedly to warn onlookers and any ferries that might have been in its path, before it finally got stuck in the embankment, which suffered damage as well as a small road. The pilot immediately contacted the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) and reported the incident. SMPA pilots then boarded the vessel. The vessel was refloated by two tugs at around 10:30 p.m. during high tide. The hull was undamaged and the ship could proceed to Kolkata under tow. On Aug 13, the ship was moored in pos. 22° 12' N 088° 09' E for investigations. There was no damage found to the cargo onboard. On Aug 14, the 'Nawata Bhum' berthed in Kolkata.
