Mainsail collapsed onto boom
One of the two sails on the 'Neoliner Origin' detached on June 27, 2026, during the return voyage from Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to Montoir. There were no injuries, but the technical failure affecting the "Solid Sail" rigging system—developed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique—needed to be understood. The ship was forced to make a technical stop at the port of Lorient on July 5, as it had suffered significant damage to its mainsail, when it collapsed onto the boom.

The 'Neoliner Origin', the world’s first large, commercial wind-propelled cargo ship, which completed its first Atlantic crossing on the evening on Oct 24, 2024, wass behind schedule and sustained some damage to one of its sails as it encountered powerful Atlantic storms. The ship had departed Saint-Nazaire on Oct 16 with its first Atlantic cargo and suffered damage on Oct 16. The top panel on the aft main sail mast was damaged. The forward mast sails were still fully functional. However, the vessel was underway in a hybrid mode combining the sails with its engine. The weather caused the vessel to arrive off the coast of Canada at the French outpost of Saint Pierre and Miquelon after dark on Oct 24. The ship was due to move on to the commercial dock on Oct 25 to offload its first cargo. Technicians were flown to the island to aid with repairs to the sail. The ship will tjen proceed to Baltimore. It had been originally scheduled to arrive on Oct 29, and it was later delayed to Oct 30, and may be later still. A welcoming event in Baltimore has been postponed until the second trip, and in the French colony, there would be a celebration on the second rotation as the vessel begins its trip back to France.
