Shrimper aground on Spitzsand
On June 15, 2026, at around 6:40 a.m., the captain of the shrimp cutter 'Neptun-SC 15', with three crew members on board, contacted the MRCC Bremen, operated by the DGzRS, after after a line had become entangled in the propeller. The vessel, unable to maneuvre, had drifted onto the Spitzsand sandbank, located just over two nautical miles north of Cuxhaven. They vessel had got stuck near buoy 30 and was unable to free itself. There was a risk that the incoming tide would push the cutter further up onto the shoal, and the rough seas caused it to shit repeatedly the sandy bottom. The lifebost 'Hans Hackmack, which was currently replacing the 'Anneliese Kramer' at the Cuxhaven station of the DGzRS, immediately headed to the position. Upon arrival, and facing north-westerly winds of force 6, gusting up to 49 km/h, the rescuers established a tow line connection. They successfully pulled the 'Neptun' off, despite the challenging conditions caused by a strong outgoing tide. By this time, the vessel's propeller was no longer blocked, so the rescuers released the tow line. The fishing vessel then proceeded to Cuxhaven under its own power. As a safety precaution, the 'Hans Hackmack' escorted the 'Neptun' all the way into the harbour.
