Grounding near Gönyű
The 'Nicko Vision' ran aground on the Danube at river kilometer 1792, in the Gönyű area in pos. 47° 45' N 017° 49 E on Dec 31, 2025, at around 4 a.m., with more than 200 passengers on board enroute from Passau, where it had sailed on Dec 26. It was supposed to arrive in Budapest after Melk, Vienna, and Esztergom. Due to low water levels, it was unable to proceed, and the program participants were taken there by bus. This was the first sign of the difficulties. The water levels on the river were approximately 23 centimetres below normal and continuing to fall, with the low levels possibly displacing a navigational marker. A tug was deployed and started an attempt to refloat the vessel, but the operation was unsuccessful. A second attempt also failed, leaving the ship firmly grounded on the riverbed. With public holiday staffing limiting available resources, passengers and crew spent New Year’s Eve aboard the stranded vessel. Police officers from the Danube Water Police Department were on the scene, and the circumstances were being clarified. On Jan 1 the relevant authorities evacuated the passengers using a barge, and transferred them to another river cruise ship, the 'Viva Two' (MMSI: 269057829), to continue their journey. The 46 crew members remained on board of the 'Nicko Vision', while further recovery efforts were being planned, though declining water levels were expected to delay refloating operations. The ship remained aground as of Jan 5. Report with video: https://kreuzfahrttester.com/2026/01/02/nicko-vision-sandbank/
