Convenicence flagged tanker suffered engine blackout
The Djibouti-flagged 'Njord' suffered an engine blackout enroute from Nipa Anchorage to Yantai, and drifted dangerously close to the coast of the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea on Dec 14, 2025. China's Sansha Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) issued a navigational warning, urging nearby traffic to proceed with caution. The incident then developed into a multi- week response effort involving offshore assets, continuous monitoring, and on-scene coordination aimed at preventing a casualty while enabling repair and safe recovery. The vessel’s drift trajectory raised concern as it moved toward shoals and shallower waters, increasing the urgency of stabilising the situation and restoring control. Arrangements were made to secure the vessel accordingly. The tanker was finally taken in tow and pulled towards Hong Kong for engine repairs. The 'Njord' was known for its association with the dark fleet and past activities involving concealment of its identity.
