FPSO arrived at Frederikshavn to be broken up
On March 26, 2026, the 'Hua Rui Long' (IMO: 9918121), one of the world's largest heavy lift ships, has arrived off Frederikshavn and dropped anchor in pos. 57° 30' N 010° 41' E, being loaded with the 'Northern Endeavour', which has made a 17,000 km journey from Australia to be broken up at the M.A.R.S recycling yard in Frederikshavn. The transport was assisted through the Suez Canal by four tugs on Feb 23, after the 26-year-old vessel was brought onto the heavylift vessel. The decommissioned ship was in too poor a condition to make the trip to Fredrikshavn itself. The Australian state was behind the decision to both transport and scrap the vessel, which operated at oil fields from 1999 to 2019 about 550 kilometers northwest of Darwin in the Timor Sea between Australia and Indonesia. The company behind the 'Northern Endeavour' went bankrupt in 2020, leaving the responsibility for the cleanup with the authorities. However, the transport to Denmark has sparked debate in Australia. There was dissatisfaction, especially among shipyard workers, that the vessel was not being scrapped locally, but instead sent to Europe.
