Former Ribeira longliner engulfed in flames off Angola
The 'Noruego' , with four crew members from the O Barbanza region on board, caught fire on Oct 16, 2025, just after noon, in Angolan waters. The crew noticed flames that spread violently from the stern toward the bridge. The fire and smoke were visible from a long distance, with flames several meters high that consumed the structure of the fishing vessel from stern to bow, devouring the wheelhouse in its wake. When the incident occurred, two of the Galician crew members were on the bridge and the other two in the engine room. At this time, it has not been possible to determine where the fire originated. A nearby boat rescued the entire crew, including four Galicians, some of them members of the company that owned the vessel. Numerous local vessels approached the vessel, trying to help extinguish the fire because there is no maritime rescue service in Angola. In August, the vessel's owners had decided to register the ship in Angola and base it in Luanda and converted it to catch octopus instead of swordfish. It had been in this new role for about a month when the incident occurred. The last AIS position recorded was on Oct 10, when the vessel was sailing north of Luanda. Fishing vessel found diabetic rower dead on his boat
The crew of the 'Noruego' found the 54-year-old Michael Holt from Porthmadog, Gwynedd, North Wales, dead in the cabin of his boat 'Manadd' in the night of Feb 24, 2024, during an attempt to row across the Atlantic Ocean. He left Gran Canaria on Jan 27 on his 2,942-mile solo challenge from Gran Canaria to Barbados last month to raise money for two charities. But some 700 miles in, Holt, who had type 1 diabetes, fell ill. The 'Noruego' accepted a tasking from Cape Verde JRCC and made directly for Michael's coordinates.
