Cruise ship had to flee from terminal fire
The 'Norwegian Jade' had to leave the cruise ship dock in Whittier on Sep 14, 2026, at 12.30 p.m., after a fire had broken out at the new built Glacier Creek Cruise Ship terminal in Whittier on at 11 a.m. Flames and billowing smoke engulfed the area around the dock. At the afternoon, at which time the fire was still burning. Around half the dock was gone. The ferry 'Klondike Express' sustained damage from the flames, heat and smoke caused by the dock fire next to the vessel, but there was no fire on board or originating from the vessel. The Phillips Cruises & Tours company’s operations continued using its other vessels, which remained in excellent condition, after being moored at a different dock. There were no reported injuries. The cruise ship itself was not impacted by the fire. Before moving away, the cruise ship assisted the firefighting operation by spraying powerful streams of water from its upper decks toward the burning dock. As conditions became more dangerous, the captain and crew safely moved the 'Norwegian Jade' away from the terminal and repositioned the ship across the bay, where passengers were able to board. No damage to the cruise ship was reported, and it continued on its way to Vancouver. Several fire units have responded, including the Anchorage Fire Department, which sent a Battalion Chief, a fire engine and two water tankers to help provide assistance. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel going to and from Whittier was closed for a few hours to allow first responders to come through, according to Wilde. The construction of the town’s cruise ship dock first broke ground in 2022 at a price tag of $80 million.
