Tanker rescued after two months adrift
The 'NW Aidara', that had been adrift at sea for almost two months was salvaged on March 27 by the Brazilian Navy and docked at the Port of Fortaleza, in Ceará. The tanker, with 11 crew members, had been adrift since February 5 due to a failure in its hydraulic system. The Brazilian Navy received the first notification about the ship on Feb 25, but it was outside the area of Brazilian jurisdiction, under the responsibility of Dakar. The problem on the ship occurred because the hydraulic hose ruptured, causing a hydraulic oil leak and damage to the rudder gear. This compromised the ship's course control, which drifted continuously until it entered the maritime area under Brazilian jurisdiction. The Brazilian Search and Rescue Service was activated as soon as the tanker entered the area of responsibility of Salvamar Northeast, approximately 675 nautical miles off the Brazilian coast. To assist in the rescue, the Navy monitored the movement of ships near the NW AIDARA. Teams also established communication and provided supplies and water to the crew of the African ship. The operation was directed by the Navy in Natal and also coordinated by the Port Authority of Ceará with the local maritime community. The ship was damaged and had a shortage of food. Furthermore, it had no satellite or high-frequency radio communication – a communication method with greater range and independent of satellites. The only way to contact the ship was via VHF. Guided by the Brazilian Navy, the merchant ship 'YK Newport' approached the adrift vessel on March 1, establishing communication and providing telemedicine assistance to inquire about the crew's health. The Navy was then informed that the crew of the ship was well and that they would attempt to manufacture a new drive gear on board to complete the repair themselves. The captain of the damaged ship reported that if the crew could not complete the repair by March 8, he would contact Brazil to request assistance. On March 9, the patrol vessel 'Araguari' was dispatched to intercept the ship in order to establish communications, assess the crew's condition, and, if necessary, provide support with supplies. At the same time, the Corvette 'Caboclo' departed from Salvador and arrived in Fortaleza to also proceed towards the African ship. A few days later, the High Seas Tugboat 'Triunfo' left the port of Natal, approached the ship, and towed it to the Port of Fortaleza.
