Fishing vessel sank off Baldaios
On April 8, 2026, at 11.40 a.m., the 'O Pillo' suffered a hull breach with ensuing water ingress, about two nautical miles northnorthwest of Baixos de Baldaio, (A Coruña), off the coast of Carballo with three crew members on board, besides the skipper, a native of Malpica with more than 20 years of experience, and two Senegalese sailors residing in the town. The fishermen had to abandon ship onto a life raft, as the pumps could not cope with the flooding. The raft was located by another fishing vessel, the ' 'Carmen Jose'. The castaways were rescued safe and sound and then transferred onto the SAR boat 'Salvamar Betelgeuse' (MMSI: 225986508), which had been mobilised by the CCS Coruña of Salvamento Marítimo. They were taken to Malpica with no injuries reported. The 'O Pillo' developed an increasing list to port side, before finally capsizing and sinking. The 'Salvamar Betelgeuse' also recovered the emergency beacon and searched the area, collecting the fishing gear floating in the sea, and finding no pollution, as the vessel had little fuel on board.
