Expertes investigating fire scene

Chinese authorities were investigating the cause of a fire on the 'Ocean Melody' in the eastern shipping port of Qingdao on Sep 12. Experts from across the country gathered in Qingdao to analyse the scene. The investigators had yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. Inside the ship’s hold, it was extremely hot. The hot steam had melted away all old oil grime that had built up on the ship, and the flames were rising from the bottom. On Sep 12, boats were still removing oil from the water surface around the floatnig dock with absorbent pads. An oil boom was laid out. Aboard the 'Ocean Melody', the interior was still vented with large hoses and fresh air blown into the compartments. An emergency lighting for the engine room was installed. SAR operation concluded after all missing were recovered dead

The SAR operation came to a close on Sep 10 after the fire aboard the 'Ocean Melody' China State Shipbuilding Corporation Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., after all 25 worker who were initially reported to be missing were located and confirmed dead. The fire broke out at around 11:15 a.m. The blaze was extinguished at around 2:30 p.m.A total of 42 people were aboard the ship. 12 were safely evacuated, and five injured were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Upon admission of the patients injured in the accident, doctors immediately conducted a comprehensive checkup on them and identified their injury to be a mild burn. They were provided with burn dressing changes, antibiotics to prevent infection, and rapid fluid replacement, among other treatments. In the burn unit of Qingdao West Coast New Area Central Hospital, two injured patients are receiving treatment. They sustained minor burns to the face and upper limbs. Emergency management, fire and rescue, police, and medical departments were immediately mobilized to carry out SAR operations following the accident. Shipyard fire killed 20 people

At least 25 people were killed in a fire aboard the 'Ocean Melody', which was undergoing repairs since Aug 31 at the Qingao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry shipyard in Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province, on Sep 10, 2026, at around 11:15 a.m. LT. Of the 42 people on board, 12 were evacuated safely and five were injured and hospitalised. Following the accident, authorities in Shandong Province and Qingdao city immediately activated an emergency response mechanism. Emergency management, fire and rescue, public security, health and industrial authorities were mobilised to carry out rescue operations. The rescuers had to enter the cargo ship's lower hold through narrow hatches, where heavy smoke and high temperatures posed challenges. The stairs inside the hold were also very slippery, making it more difficult to move trapped people. The main difficulties facing rescuers were heavy smoke, high temperatures and extremely slippery stairs.
