Container ship underway to repair yard two months after fire
On Jan 22, the 'ONE Henry Hudson' has left the Yusen Container Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles enroute to Chang Jiang Kou with an ETA as of Feb 9. The vessel was headed across the Pacific for repairs at an unspecified repair yard. The Ocean Network Express (ONE) told clients on Jan 22 that that the the cargo discharging operation was completed on Jan 19. All cargo has been stored at the designated yard spaces at the Yusen Terminal with shippers requited to pay general average to get their containers. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire had started below deck, likely from an electrical source, then spread through multiple sublevels. A mid-deck explosion disrupted onboard power, knocking out lights and crane operations.
Discharge of remaining containers has commenced
The Ocean Network Express has begun discharging the remaining containers from the 'ONE Henry Hudson' at the Port of Los Angeles, marking a new phase in the most technically complex salvage operation in recent port history. The vessel remained berthed at the Yusen Terminal following the completion of water removal and -cargo extraction from fire affected bays on Jan 12, 2026. Full container discharge operations were scheduled to begin mid-week. The damaged cargo and firefighting water were to be properly removed and disposed of. The General Average surveyor Ken Shortall has begun arranging cargo surveys on Jan 14. After the vessel’s owner, Fukujin Kisen, has declared General Average, Richards Hogg Lindley has been appointed as average adjuster to collect required securities and documentation. Cargo will not be released until arrangements were finalised with the adjuster, who will work directly with cargo owners and insurers. The cargo hold 03 was estimated to have been flooded up to 80 % during firefighting. The salvagecompanbny Donjon-Smit has mobilised specialists from around the world. All waste, including the contaminated firefighting water, were disposed of under an approved waste-management plan and transported to licensed treatment facilities. Once containers clear General Average and salvage-security requirements, Los Angeles-bound imports were to be released at the Yusen Terminal for local pickup or inland delivery. Oakland-bound cargo may be collected in Los Angeles following customs clearance or railed north by ONE. Export cargo will continue to be forwarded to destination unless customers request changes. Barge removing contaminated water from cargo hold
On Dec 18, a barge arrived at the Yusen Terminal (YTI) at the Port of Los Angeles and commenced water discharge operation for an affected cargo hold of the 'ONE Henry Hudson'. During this period, cargo discharge operations could not be conducted. An updated advisory was to be issued once the water discharge operation has been completed. The vessel was still under the supervision of the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Therefore, the resumption of cargo operations was also subject to the permission of USCG. General Average has also been declared for the vessel.
