Specialised vessel joins search for 14 missing people aboard Fylo Jet
On Sep 14, the 'Optimus Prime' has begun operations to search for 14 people still missing after the high-speed passenger vessel 'Fylo Jet' (IMO: 8962034) sank off Kyrenia. At the wreck site it started underwater search and inspection operations. The vessel is designed for deep-sea research and can maintain a precise position in open waters while operating remote-controlled underwater vehicles, allowing investigators to access areas of the wreck that have previously been difficult to reach. The operation aimed to intensify searches around the wreck and in deeper waters, using the vessel’s additional equipment. The Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu boarded the vessel to inspect the operation. The search efforts were continued around the clock with authorities usnig every available resource to locate the still missing 14 people. The vessel would enable authorities to examine previously inaccessible sections of the wreck and conduct a detailed inspection of the wreck's interior. Every part of the wreck was to be examined with great care. After the ferry, with 267 passengers and crew members aboard, sank, total of 239 people were rescued, while 14 people died and another 14 remained missing. Exploration ship equipped at Limassol for work off Cyprus
The "Ocean Investigator" has arrived at the Limassol East Container Terminal on March 14, 2018,as political tensions with Turkey over gas exploration rights in the Mediterranean persisted. The ship was due to carry out hydrocarbon exploration in block 10 of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A second vessel, the "Med Surveyor", will arrive on March 15. Exxonmobil planned to carry out exploration ahead of possible drilling in the second half of the year. But Turkey blocked similar efforts by Italian energy company Eni last month, saying Turkish Cypriots in an unrecognised enclave in Cyprus’ north should get an immediate share of the revenues. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated in a speech on March 14 that gas exploration off Cyprus should not take place without the involvement of Turkish Cyprus. The "Ocean Investigator" will remain at Cyprus’ Limassol port until March 24 to load equipment, but it might depart earlier depending on progress.
