Fire put out by Ukrainian fire fighters

Wed Nov 19 17:15:12 CET 2025 Timsen

The fire on the 'Orinda' in the port of Izmail has been extinguished. During the attack early on Nov 17. the gas pumping equipment caught fire. The crew immediately commenced a shutdown operation. Ukrainian firefighters started working to put out the blaze. A fire boat was positioned alongside the vessel, and on the morning of Nov 18, the fire could be largely extinguished. The Turkish General Directorate of Maritime Affairs was informed that the cooling effort had been completed and there was no more risk. A portion of the gas cargo burned off during the fire. Ukraine had brought in a large vessel to refill the water tanks overnight, helping to reduce the danger of an explosion. More than 230 people had self-evacuated or were moved by the Romanian officials from two Romanian villages as a precaution. They were being permitted to return to their homes. The vessel was towed away from the dock to an anchorage on Nov 19. A full survey was to be conducted to determine the amount of damage. Crew safe and taken care of by Turkish consulate, cargo still on fire, two Romanian villages evacuated

Tue Nov 18 18:14:06 CET 2025 Timsen

While the 16 crew members of the 'Orinda' were rescued in good health, two thirds of the LPG cargo were still on board, and firefighters were trying to cool the ship. Security measures at the port of Izmail have been stepped up due to risk of an explosio, wbhile the fire was still ongoing, after a UAV had struck the ship in an attack shortly after midnight on Nov 17. The ship’s crew contacted the duty phone of the Turkish consulate general and reported the situation. The consular staff coordinated with local authorities and ensured the necessary consular protection, taking measures for the safety of the crew. A technical team from the company that owns the vessel was expected to arrive at the port. The visible flames indicate an ongoing combustion. There was still a risk of explosion, particularly if the vessel overheated or if the gas storage area became critically hot. Before being hit by a drone, the tanker was likely in process of being sold, brokers said. The damage, however, may jeopardise the previously reported sale The Romanian authorities on Nov 17 ordered the evacuation of two Danube villages, Plauru and Ceatalchioi, Tulcea County, according to the decision of the County Committee for Emergency Situations. 300 people have been moved, as the area remains at high risk of explosion with a potential impact radius of 4.5 to 5 kilometers. Arafat specified that permanent contact is being kept with the Ukrainian authorities, and the situation at this moment makes the evacuation of the two localities imperative. Tue Nov 18 10:17:34 CET 2025 Timsen

Several vessels were damaged; and a fire broke out aboard the 'Orinda' in Izmail after a Russian barrage targeting Ukrainian ports overnight along the Black Sea and Danube. One person was injured, but there were concerns for the safety of the gas carrier. The ship was offloading a cargo of liquified petroleum gas when the attack occurred and the gas pumping equipment caught fire. The vessel immediately commenced a shutdown operation, and the 16 crew members were safely evacuated. Ukrainian firefighters were working to put out the blaze. There was no immediate danger from the fire. The vessel was just 500 meters from two villages across the Danube from Izmail. As a precaution, they evacuated between 100 and 150 people, with the local mayor saying they were concerned the ship could explode at any moment.
