Ramp gave way - passengers landed in the water

Mon May 04 12:41:01 CEST 2026 Timsen

On April 26, 2026, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the ramp of the 'Ostfriesland' tilted due to a technical malfunction during the boarding, while the ferry was docked at the Borkum pier. causing it to slide off the pier. As a result, three people, all women in their 70s, fell 1,5 metres deep into the water, which had a temperature of 10 degrees C. Crew members were able to immediately rescue them from the water with slings. Two of them were taken to Emden Hospital as a precaution, but were able to leave again the same evening. The third woman continued her voyage to Borkum. After consultation with the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr), additional safety measures were implemented to allow ferry service to continue. Ships have be secured more strongly with additional ropes in the future. Further investigations were conducted by the Emden Water Police Station with the ferry operator cooperating.
