Ship completed first commercial round trip from Busan to Europe via Arctic alternative shipping route

Tue Oct 13 11:54:04 CEST 2026 Timsen

South Korea has completed its first commercial round trip to Europe via the Arctic alternative shipping route with the 'PanStar Acro', which docked in the port of Busanon Oct 11, 2026, after the 50-day test voyage. The voyage took slightly longer than the planned 45 days. The freighter had departed Busan on Aug 22 with significantly fewer containers than its intended capacity for the test voyage through the so-called Northeast Passage. Later, the ship, carrying cargo including chemicals and used cars, stopped in Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Gdansk. With this test voyage, the South Korean government had assessed the feasibility of the Arctic route for commercial shipping. Seoul was aiming to establish the Arctic Passage as a new trade route in the long term and develop Busan into an international logistics hub.

South Korea sent the first container ship through Arctic route

Sun Aug 23 17:03:46 CEST 2026 Timsen

South Korea has sent its first trial container ship, the 'Panstar Acro', from Busan through the Arctic on Aug 22, 2026, while environmental groups warned the route could accelerate polar ice melt. The Middle East conflict, sparked by US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, has roiled global shipping, sending governments and shipping firms scrambling to seek alternative routes. The "PanStar Acro" was to test whether a route opened by melting sea ice could be commercially viable. The ship was headed for Felixstowe with an ETAasofSep 13, then to Rotterdam and Gdansk, before returning, with the voyage expected to take about 45 days. The voyage followed that of the Chinese container ship 'Dubai Tower', which left the port of Ningbo for Europe, heading north through the Bering Strait before turning west along Russia's Arctic coast. The usual maritime route between Asia and Europe runs through the Suez Canal, but travelling through the Arctic can cut the journey by around 7,000 kilometers and about ten days.
