White phosphorus from WW II ignited upon contact with the air during unlaoding works in Emden
On the afternoon of Feb 26, 2026, during the transshipment of stone and earth material from the construction site in Emden's outer harbuor (Ems pier extension) to inner harbour, near the EVAG Terminal II, remnants of World War II munitions were discovered. The munitions were incendiary rounds containing white phosphorus. The stone and earth material was scheduled to be transshipped at Terminal 2 later that afternoon. The excavator on board the 'Parcival' had inadvertently unloaded the stone and earth mixture, along with the munitions, from the ship onto the pier in pos. 53° 21' N 007° 12' E. Residual traces of white phosphorus ignited upon contact with the air. Fortunately, no one was injured and the vessel sustained no damage. The Emden Water Police, the Emden Fire Department, Niedersachsen Ports, and employees of the Emden Environmental Authority were on site. On the advice of the bomb disposal unit, the unloading operations were temporarily suspended and were to be resumed on March 2 with qualified personnel. The remaining incendiary munitions was removed by the bomb disposal unit. There was no danger to people, as the scene of the incident was cordoned off from the public.
