Debris of wrecked yachts being removed
Crews have cordoned off part of the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos off Cape Greco as operations to recover wreckage from the 'Petsas I' and 'Perla Bianca' on Sep 2. Specialist contractors hired by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping were clearing debris from the shoreline, surface and seabed. Large pieces of both boats remained on the seabed, and a large crane was needed to lift them out. The Ministry of Shipping, together with the Department of Fisheries, started surveys on Aug 31. Officials recorded objects along the coastline and on the seabed, where divers went down to survey the wreckage. On Sep 1, an urgent tender was issued for the lifting and collection of all the debris. THe officials had also spoken to the insurance companies for the two sunken boats, which will cover the cost of the operation, which was estimated to be around 170,000 euros. Working with the Cyprus Ports Authority, it was decided that the wreckage would be moved to a covered CPA facility at Larnaca port. The tender was awarded to VTS (Vasiliko Terminal Services), which operates tugs and anti-pollution equipment at Vasiliko. The company has been given seven working days to complete the clean-up of the seabed, sea surface and coastline. The first equipment arrived on Sep 1, and the initial step was to lay a containment boom to address pollution concerns. Divers were working to retrieve the smaller pieces. An autopsy has confirmed that the 76-year-old businessman Dimis Mavropoulos died from drowning and multiple bodily injuries after becoming trapped in the wreckage in rough seas. Police and maritime officials were probing the circumstances surrounding the death, with the case file set to be submitted to the Law Office once the remaining reports are compiled. The Committee for the Investigation of Marine Accidents and Incidents was leading a separate investigation into safety issues surrounding the 'Petsas I'. A NAVTEX notice issued by the JRCC remained in effect until the area has been fully restored. Businessman Dimi Mavropoulos died while trying to save his yacht in storm
The 'Perla Bianca' was destroyed in a violent storm with heavy downpour in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area near Ayia Napa on Aug 29, 2026. She was one of three yachts caught in the storm off Cape Greco (Konnos Bay), that sank, the other was the 'Pelas 1', built as as 'Donna Bella' by Camper & Nicholsons in 1938, and only the ' Phantom', a 24.37-metre Fairline 78 Squadron yacht, survived at its mooring amid wave heights of 2,5 metres, and left the bay on Aug 30. The owner of the sunken luxury superyacht, the former rally champion and millionaire businessman Dimi Mavropoulos (76), lost his life. The head honcho of Mavromarine Ltd., a maritime and vehicle rental firm, found himself caught in a sudden storm while navigating the waters along with two other boats in the vicinity. The Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) launched a search at about 2.30 p.m., after receiving reports of vessels in trouble. Mavropoulos' superyacht and another boat were swept into the rocks by the storm and destroyed. Mr Mavropoulos’s yacht tipped sideways into the rocks when two women dived off the decks. The businessman was urged by his friends to evacuate the boat, but insisted on staying behind to save it from the rocks, but it was smashed. Police and military helicopters, a police patrol boat, the Famagusta Police Directorate, the Special Disaster Response Unit, the Famagusta Fire Department and ambulances were involved in the response. Six people were recovered from the water. A Famagusta Police patrol rescued one person, while a helicopter lifted five others from the scene, with two taken to hospital. Mavropoulos was recovered unconscious by helicopter and taken to the same hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Among the rescued were Mavropoulos's wife and daughter. Authorities have issued a navigation safety warning over debris of the smashed yachts in the water. Dimis Mavropoulos died by drowning following multiple injuries
Forensic examinations have confirmed that Dimis Mavropoulos died by drowning following multiple injuries sustained in the loss of the 'Perla Bianca' off Cape Greco. The findings were released on Aug 31 after an autopsy was carried out on Mavropoulos' body by the Cyprus Forensic Medicine Service. The official cause of death was recorded as drowning in water in the presence of multiple bodily injuries. The forensic examination found several injuries on his body, which were consistent with the circumstances reported at the time of the incident, with rough sea conditions and the accidental impact of the vessel on the rocks. The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Angeliki Papetta, Director of the Forensic Medicine Service, and the forensic pathologist Dr. Orthodoxos Orthodoxou. The findings provided the official medical determination of the circumstances surrounding Mavropoulos' death following the fatal incident off Cape Greco.
