No significant change in Danube water quality following sinking of two barges
Water quality indicators monitored downstream of the 'Phoenix Jupiter', loaded with loaded with ammonium nitrate-based fertilizer, and another barge, carrying potassium chloride, near Zimnicea and offshore Giurgiu, respectively, were showing no significant deviations, the 'Romanian Waters' National Administration (ANAR) said on Jan 13. 'Continuous monitoring confirmed no major changes in water quality parameters, no fish mortality, and no impact on downstream water intakes located more than 100 kilometers away. All water users would be notified if laboratory analyses revealed variations in monitored indicators. After the ''Phoenix Jupiter' sank on Jan 9, representatives of the ANAR and the National Environmental Guard conducted on-site inspections. On Jan 10, water samples were collected upstream, adjacent to the vessels, and downstream, including 10 kilometres away. Analyses targeted physico-chemical parameters relevant to fertilizer pollution: pH, electrical conductivity, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, and potassium. The results indicated a localized increase in ammonium concentration at Zimnicea, but it was fully diluted within a few kilometers due to natural dispersion. No exceedances of quality thresholds were recorded. Drinking water catchments in the Chiciu area, Calarasi County, remained unaffected. Daily monitoring was continued at three points, upstream, downstream, and at both wreck sites, by the Arges-Vedea Water Basin Administration through the Teleorman and Giurgiu Water Management Systems. In parallel, the Lower Danube River Administration was coordinating the refloating operations, which involved sealing hull breaches, draining water, and deploying lifting systems. If refloating proves unsafe, the wrecks will be dismantled on site and transported to a shipyard. Two barges sank on Danube
The 'Phoenix Jupiter', loaded with 1,133 tons of nitrogen-based chemical fertilizers sank on Jan 10, 2026 on the Danube, near Zimnicea. Representatives of the Romanian Waters took water samples to check the level of pollution. The ship had run aground on Dec 20, 2025, began taking on water, and finally sank on Jan 10. The shipowner was notified to start to remove the wreck within 10 days. The Mayor of Zimnicea, Mr. Petre Pârvu, informed the citizens that the grounding of the 'Phoenix Jupiter' did not endanger the city. The Teleorman Public Health Directorate notified the event in the ReSanMed system and informed the public health departments in the Danube riparian counties, located downstream of Zimnicea. The competent authorities were permanently monitoring the situation, including the risk of pollution, with daily investigation. The results of samples collected on Jan 12 showed an exceedance of the ammonium indicator.Traffic and transport on the Danube were not affected as the ship was outside the fairway. On Jan 9, also a barge with the call sign PZ 14803 sank at kilometer 528 of the Danube, after hitting a displaced and unmarked wreck. It had a cargo of 1,281 tons of potassium chloride, bulk cargo, and was sailing under the Slovak flag. It also sank in the Bulgarian sector.
