More tankers on EU sanctions list to stop Russian war
The EU’s 21st Package of Sanctions against Russia, which was announced on July 23, 2026 has blacklisted more Russian Arctic vessels, including the 'Aleksey Kosygin' (IMO: 9904546), an LNG tanker used on the Northern Sea Route. The vessel was operating for Novatek and its Arctic LNG 2 project. Together with the 'Christophe de Margerie' (IMO: 9737187), it was shuttling between Utrenneye in the Gulf of Ob and the Saam FSU in Ura Bay. On July 27, the tanker was located in the Bering Sea, possibly en route to the Koryak FSU in Bechevinskaya Bay, Kamchatka, with a cargo of LNG from Arctic LNG 2. The package also included more than 100 banks and crypto operators, several oil refineries, and more than 50 military- industrial entities, among them key actors involved in the production of Russia’s long-range drones. On the list were also more than 40 vessels in Russia’s shadow fleet, with several of these ships being frequent visitors to Arctic waters. Among the other ships added to the sanctions list was the LNG carrier 'Luch' (IMO: 9317315), a 20-year-old tanker which was until recently sailing under the flag of Sierra Leone and with an unknown ISM manager. In May 2026, the carrier paid a visit to the Kola Peninsula, where it might have loaded LNG at the sanctioned FSU 'Saam'. The owners of the 'Luch' have changed the ship’s name three times in 2026. In January, the ship was named 'Akit LNG'. Later the same month, the name was changed to 'Lake LNG', and in March 2026, it received its current name. On the sanctions list was also the 'Pioneer', a tanker that was frequently calling at Murmansk. Since July 2024, the ship has been owned by the Reliable Marine Solutions DMCC, a company registered in Dubai. Among the sanctioned vessels was also the 'Tavian' (IMO: 9147447). In early 2026, the tanker was banned from German territorial waters and subsequently sailed north along the Norwegian coast to Murmansk. The ship was sailing under a false IMO number. On the EU sanctions list was also the 'Andrei Pervovanniy' (IMO: 9255268), a tanker which wwas involved in deliveries to the Russian east Arctic town of Pevek.
Russian vessels on sanctions list changed their names and flags
Several Russian vessels on the EU sanctions list have recently changed their names and were reflagged to maintain a low profile. A number of these shadow fleet vessels are currently sailing in European waters. The European Union (EU) maintains a sanctions list of 557 vessels affiliated with Russia or Belarus and therefore not welcome. These vessels are prohibited from entering EU ports. The Russians are attempting to evade the sanctions by reflagging and renaming vessels that are added to the sanctions list. For example, the 'Mianzimu' (IMO: 9299666), which was added to the sanctions list in 2024, was suddenly reflagged to the Gambian flag and renamed 'Dashan'. That vessel is currently sailing from Turkey to Russia. The 'Alissa' (IMO: 9273052) was renamed 'Soufia 1' and sails under the Swaziland flag. The vessel is currently in Singaporean waters. The 'Delvina' (IMO: 9331153) was formerly known as 'Galian 2' and sails under the Comoros flag. A number of vessels that have only been on the sanctions list since 2024 have been found to be operating in European waters, often under a new name and flag state. The 'Andromeda' was renamed 'Amazon' under the Omani flag. The ship is currently sailing in the North Sea en route from Russia to Egypt. The 'Marabella Sun' (IMO: 9323376), currently sailing in the North Sea en route from the port of Yalova to the Russian port of Primorsk, was re-flagged to Gambia, a flag state often used by Russia as a cover, and renamed 'Chariot Ride'. The 'Phoenix' (IMO: 9333424), now called the 'Photon' and currently sailing under the Gambian flag, was actually en route from Turkey to Tangier. The 'Pioneer', formerly the 'Futura' and briefly the 'Sehnaz Ka', is currently sailing off the coast of Norway, en route from a Russian port in the Gulf of Finland to the port of Sabetta in northern Russia and is circumnavigating Norway with an ETA as of Dec 11.
