Former Moby Otta to be broken up
The former 'Moby Otta', which is currently anchored off Penang, where it has been stationed for several months, will be broken up. The ship had been purchased in August 2025 by the Chinese company Hoiyu International Group Ltd. with the intention of using it as a floating hotel and casino in Malaysia. Following the sale, the ferry, which had been docked in Livorno since Oct 1, 2025, set sail for Asia on Nov 26, arriving in Ningde on Dec 31. On Feb 12, 2026, after a stint in a Fujian shipyard, the ferry departed for George Town. There, on March 3, it began its new role, operating as a cruise ship and floating casino offering daily mini-cruises off the coast of Penang under the Elpis Cruise banner. The ship was renamed 'Pisa' on Aug 1 and re-registered under the flag of St. Kitts & Nevis, preparing for her final voyage to a ship-breaking yard.
Ferry sold, renamed and re- flagged
The 'Moby Ott' has been sold to the Hoyu International Group Ltd. based in the China, renamed 'Elpis' and registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis. On Oct 1, the ferry shifted from Genova to Livorno, where it remained stationary as of Oct 16, awaiting its departure for the Far East for further operations. The sale of the fomer 'Moby Otta' followed that of her sister ship 'Moby Drea', which was sold in April to the Italian company MedFuel Srl. She was later unsuccessfully sent for scrapping in Turkey, where the import permit was revoked after it became clear that the ship contained a higher amount of asbestos-contaminated material than Turkish regulations allow for the import of vessels for dismantling. Instead, she was towed to Split, where Brodosplit Shipyard was supposed to carry out asbestos removal. However, this was also prevented by Croatian authorities following local protests. As a result, the ferry under tow by the Greek tug 'Protug 75', had to return to Crotone on Sep 6. Both ships were operated by the Swedish company Salenrederierna AB and its Tor Line service between Gothenburg, Felixstowe, and Amsterdam. Only a few months after the 'Moby Otta' was sold into the Malaysian casino trade, she was sold for scrap too in August 2026. https://shipandbunker.com/news/features/risk-management/366853-weekly-vessel-scrapping-report-2026-week-33
