Grounding caused by technical failure
The grounding of the ‘Primula Seaways’ in the West Outer Harbour of Terneuzen was caised by a technical malfunction, described as a blackout, possibly as a result of system failure. The shipping company DFDS did not provide further details regarding the cause. Rijkswaterstaat planned to recover the damages to the dike, at the foot of which the ship got stuck just in front of the West Lock on Aug 7 at around 10:00 a.m. Several tugs, initially from Multraship and from Boluda, were deployed to pull the ship free at around 12:40 p.m. After an extensive inspection by the authorities, the ship received permission to continue its journey later that same day. Waterway and dike manager Rijkswaterstaat was dealing with significant damage to the Westerschelde Dike. The ship's bulb tore a trench in the soft revetment of the dike. It must be determined exactly what the damage is below the waterline; an initial estimate was that the repairs may cost hundreds of thousands Euro.
Grounded ferry in Terneuzen refloated by three tugs
The 'Primula Seaways', enroute to Ghent, ran aground with its bow against the river bank in the western foreport of Terneuzen in pos. 51° 20' N 003° 49' E on Aug 7, 2026, at 10.25 a.m. The grounding was possibly caused by a blackout of the onboard systems. The tugs 'Multratug 9' (IMO: 9770866), 'Multratug 16' (IMO: 8414154) and 'VB Cavalier' (IMO: 9034987) as well as the port tender 'Patriot' were mobilised to refloat the ship, which was en route to the new lock. Rijkswaterstaat sent the patrol boat 'Maeslant' to assess the situation. After the ship has been towed free, it was expected to be inspected. For shipping, the consequences were limited for the time being. Around midday, the locks were temporarily closed anyway due to the low water level in the canal. The Multraship tugts pulled the 'Primula Seaways' off at 12.45 p.m., after which the ship could be towed away and was held near the lock by two tugs, after the 'Multratug 9' was released. It was not yet clear whether the 'Primula Seaways' was damaged by the grounding. The ship left the port of Terneuzen again on Aug 8 and arrived in Ghent the same day.
